Corrosion hidden beneath a layer of insulation can develop unnoticed for years, and its effects can be dramatic - from plant breakdowns to multimillion-dollar losses in industrial plants. In this article, we explain what CUI is, how to detect it and - most importantly - how to prevent it effectively.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0What is CUI and why is it dangerous?<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is a corrosion phenomenon that develops under the insulation layer, in areas exposed to moisture and varying temperatures.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is most common on pipelines and tanks operating at temperatures between -4\u00b0C and +120\u00b0C - that is, where insulation should protect, but becomes a source of the problem.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The consequences: metal degradation, leaks, failures, safety risks and gigantic repair costs.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0Typical sites of CUI<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Flanges and bolted connections.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bends and reductions where the insulation has numerous cuts and overlaps.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pipeline penetrations through walls and structures.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zones close to valves and boxes.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Places where insulation has been mechanically damaged or poorly installed.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0How to detect CUI in practice?<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Visual inspections - regular checks on the condition of the insulation and protective coating.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thermal imaging inspection - detection of areas of altered temperature indicating moisture.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NDT (non-destructive testing) - ultrasound, radiography to assess wall thickness.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Localised insulation openings - spot check areas exposed to moisture.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Continuous monitoring - state-of-the-art moisture and temperature sensor systems under insulation.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Methods to prevent CUI<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Correct installation of insulation - maintaining overlaps, use of sealants, correct overlap of protective coating.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drainage holes - placed at suitable locations (the lowest points of the pipework) allow water to drain away.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use of anti-corrosion coatings - protecting the metal even before insulation is applied.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Selection of suitable insulation materials - e.g. hydrophobic or closed-cell materials (Armaflex, PIR, FoamGlass).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regular inspector supervision -
