Norms and standards in industrial insulation

NORSOK, PN-B, CINI and FROSIO

Industrial insulation is an industry where there is no room for improvisation. Every project must be carried out according to strict norms and standards that guarantee safety, durability and energy efficiency. An insulation fitter who knows and applies these rules is a sought-after specialist on the market - especially in Scandinavia and Western Europe. In this article we will introduce the most important standards: NORSOK, PN-B, CINI and FROSIO and show how we teach their application at the Natalux Training Centre.

NORSOK M-004 - the Norwegian standard for industrial insulation

  • Developed by the Norwegian oil and gas industry.
  • It contains detailed requirements for thermal, cold, acoustic and fire insulation.
  • It specifies, among other things, the method of installation, choice of materials, requirements for protective jackets and drainage openings.
  • The NORSOK exam is one of the most respected certifications in the industry - a pass to work on offshore and onshore projects in Norway.

PN-B-20105:2024-04 - the current Polish standard

  • National standard governing technical insulation.
  • Defines material and installation requirements in Poland.
  • It provides a benchmark for companies operating in the country and implementing EU-compliant projects.
  • It is part of the professional qualification system (ZSK, ZRP), in which the profession of insulation fitter has the number 712403.

CINI - European technical insulation guidelines

  • CINI (Committee Industrial Insulation) is a comprehensive guideline developed by experts from across Europe.
  • The CINI manual covers more than 1,000 pages of standards: from material selection to installation techniques to inspection requirements.
  • It is a reference document in many industrial projects - especially in Germany and the Netherlands.
  • Knowing CINI means that the fitter works according to the „European Industrial Insulation Bible”.

FROSIO - inspection and quality control

  • FROSIO (Norwegian Professional Council for Education and Certification of Inspectors of Surface Treatment) is a certification organisation for inspectors.
  • The FROSIO certificate confirms the inspector's competence in quality control of surface protection and insulation.
  • Inspectors with this certification work on major offshore projects, in the shipbuilding, petrochemical and energy industries.
  • For trainees, this means that they are training in a centre that works according to internationally recognised quality systems.

How do we teach norms and standards at Natalux?

  • The course programme is based on 20 years of practical experience and the latest industry standards.
  • Students learn a minimal but necessary amount of theory - the rest is practice on the workshop floor.
  • Each participant works in accordance with the requirements of NORSOK, PN-B, CINI and FROSIO.
  • The trainers simulate real inspection situations - the trainee not only assembles, but also learns how the inspector will assess his work.

Knowledge of norms and standards is not an add-on, but the foundation of working in industrial insulation. They are what turn Natalux trainees into the specialists that employers all over Europe want to employ. Our courses teach not only „how to insulate”, but above all „how to insulate according to the requirements of international quality standards”.
